Shutdown System on UNIX

1. Have all users go to main menu:  press CTRL C, then the ENTER key, so everyone is at the $ prompt.  Then have everyone type: exit and press the ENTER key. In other words, log everyone off.

2. Log in as root on terminal 1 (main console).

  • Type: root as the user name
  • Press the ENTER key, enter a password - use your company password.
  • When successfully logged in as root, there will be a # just before the cursor.

3. At the # type:

  • who and press ENTER.

This will give a listing of all the users that are currently logged on to the system. The only user that should be logged onto the system is yourself, logged in as root. If any other lines appear showing other users still logged onto the system, get them logged off.  Repeat step 3 until you are the only user logged on.

4. Now at the # type:

  • lpstat -t and press ENTER.

This will list any jobs still pending in the print queue. If there are any, note the printer name- job number, and for each one, type "cancel along with the printername-jobnumber."

(i.e. if ti810-8129 is printing, then type: cancel ti810-8129) then press ENTER.  Another example is: print2-8132 is printing, then type: cancel print2-8132, then press ENTER.

5. Repeat step 4 until there are no more print jobs are in the print queue.

6. At the # type:

  • shutdown -y -g0 and press ENTER - (the 0 is a zero, not the letter "O")

When the ENTER key is pressed, this will immediately shut down the system.

7. When the message  "Safe to power down"  appears on the screen:

  • turn off the power to main computer system. Leave the power off for about a minute so that all the disk drives stop spinning. (This ensures that all the hardware devices will be properly reinitialized during the reboot).

8. Turn the computer back on again, but DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING. Let the system autoboot by itself.

It will pause at the prompt:  BOOT:  for a couple of minutes, then the system will proceed and answer all the bootup questions by itself. It will pause at the date for half a minute or so.  Do not touch, the autoboot should proceed.

  • Note:  If you do press ENTER, then it will be necessary for you to answer all the questions. Answer YES to tell the system to fix any problems it finds. When asked to enter CTRL-D to go into multi-user mode, do so. If the date is OK, just press ENTER. If not, follow the onscreen instructions for changing it.

9. The Bootup is finished when the login prompt appears on the screen.  Log back into Profits Plus.
