Add a Jet Direct Network printer

This will always work for HP jet direct printers and it might even work for non HP printers, but you'll have to ask about it if it is a non HP printer.
You must be root
This will temporarily shut down the spooler, so check for pending spool jobs.   lpstat -t
If they are in the middle of a big print job then you should wait until they aren't so busy.

Step 1. /etc/hosts - add an entry for the IP address and printer name.

Step 2. scoadmin --> Printers --> HP Network Printer Manager

  • choose 6) Add printer to spooler
  • Enter the lp spooler destination name: the new printer name from /etc/hosts
  • Enter the network peripheral name (default=xxxxxx): press enter to default to same
  • Enter model script name: ('*' to see choices ): HPLaserJet

or enter * to see list of choices

  • Enter the spooler class for the peripheral to join (optional): press enter
  • Will this be the default printer?: press enter for No

Ready to shut down the spooling system, configure the new destination, and start the spooling system again. When the spooling system is shut down all printing will stop. Any print requests that are currently printing will be reprinted in their entirety when the spolling system is restarted.

  • OK to contiue? (y/n/q default=y)
  • choose 4) Verify network printer connectivity

Send a ping to the printer to test connection. It will stop pinging automatically after 4 or 5 pings.

Send a test file to the printer and look for a successful delivery in the displayed text.

If it fails, you should verify that SNMP is enabled on the printer.

  • Enter q at the HP NETWORK PRINTER CONFIGURATION TASKS MAIN MENU to return to the scoadmin menu.

Number of banner pages: 0

  • Settings -->Serial Comm... -->

set Flow Control = Hardware

  • Get out of scoadmin completely. Go back to the unix prompt (as root).

enter /usr/lib/lpadmin -p printername -o nobanner
