File transfer using vpn.mvsoftware.com

You can set it up so you can securely drag and drop files from/to a remote windows server.  This does not require PCAnyWhere. The following instructions tell you how to map a network drive on your PC to a shared folder on a remote PC using vpn.mvsoftware.com.

On the remote machine:

1. Create a shared drive.

Make their \u directory a shared directory.  Right click on the u directory and choose sharing from the pop up menu.

On the "Sharing" tab, click the option for "Share this folder and then click OK.

2. Set up a network connection to our vpn.

Go to the control panel and choose "Network and Dial-up Connections".

Click on "Make New Connection"

The Network Connection Wizard displays.  Click Next.

Click the option for "Connect to a private network through the Internet".  Then click Next.

Enter vpn.mvsoftware.com  for the destination address.  Then click Next.

Click on the connection option for "For all users".    DO NOT click on "Only for myself".  Then click Next.

Do not enable Internet Connection Sharing for this connection.  Click Next.

Name the connection vpn.mvsoftware.com.  Then click Finish.

Enter your normal username and password for your vpn connection.  And click "Connect".   Do not check the box for "Save Password" because we don't want anyone else to use this connection after you are done with it.

Click OK on the "Connection complete" window.

Open a DOS prompt window and enter the command ipconfig

Find the section for vpn.mvsoftware.com and make a note of the ip address.  You'll need this address in the next step.

On your local machine:

1. Map a network drive to the remote ip address.  If the instructions below don't work, go to "2. If you can't map a drive to the remote machine..." below.

Open Windows Explorer and click on Tools to display a drop down menu.

If you have already mapped a vpn drive for a different ip address then you'll have to choose "Disconnect Network Drive"  from the drop down menu before you choose Map Network Drive.

In Windows Explorer, choose Tools --> Map Network Drive.   In the folder text box, enter the ip address for the new vpn.mvsoftware.com connection you made on the remote machine.  Prefix the address with \\.  and follow it with the \u shared directory.  example:  \\192.168.111.192\u       Click Finish.

If it asks for a network password, give it the same username & password you used to logon to the remote machine.

Now, in Windows Explorer,  you can drag and drop files to the new network drive you have mapped.

2. If you can't map a drive to the remote machine...

If Mapping a drive on your PC doesn't work you can take another route by using Windows explorer on the remote machine.  But you still have to have a good vpn connection.

Go to the remote machine.  Go to Windows Explorer and enter ftp://root:mvs1@192.168.100.1 in the address box.

The MVS machine will appear in the directory tree in the folders window of Windows Explorer.  You can copy/paste files from/to the local/remote machines.

Here are the most common ftp commands you'll need to access our computers at MVS.

MVS:  ftp://root:mvs1@192.168.100.1

Sabrina:  ftp://administrator:1sabrina1@192.168.100.24

mobiecast:  ftp://neil:neil1@192.168.100.102

mocha:  ftp://administrator:mocha1@192.168.100.4
