RELEASE: OpenServer Enterprise System Release 5.0.0, 5.0.2, 5.0.4, 5.0.5, 5.0.6
OpenServer Host System Release 5.0.0, 5.0.2, 5.0.4, 5.0.5, 5.0.6
OpenServer Desktop System Release 5.0.0, 5.0.2, 5.0.4, 5.0.5, 5.0.6
PROBLEM: The root password is not known.
SOLUTION: Take these steps to restore the root password:
1. Locate your OpenServer Boot diskette for Release 5.0.0, 5.0.2,
5.0.4, or 5.0.5 and installation media (tape, CD or floppies).
2. Reboot the system with the SCO OpenServer Boot diskette in the drive.
3. Type 'tools' at the Boot: prompt.
4. The kernel will load. This may take a few minutes. Eventually,
the system will display:
Starting Initial System Load From: Floppy Disk
Reading from Install Source: ## KB
5. The 'Restricted Rights' screen will appear. Press <Enter> to continue.
6. At the next screen, verify that the installation media is correct.
Make any necessary changes to the media selection and press
<Enter> to continue.
7. You may be told to reboot to allow your installation device
to work. If you used a special boot parameters during install
you may need to use those same parameters to allow the
installation media to be recognized.
For example:
Boot: tools link=alad Sdsk=alad(0,0,0,0) Srom=wd(0,5,0)
After rebooting, you will follow steps 4-6 again.
8. Insert the installation media when prompted.
9. The system will verify the installation media and begin to extract
files from the media.
The bottom of the screen will read:
Reading from Install Source: ## KB
10.After a few utilities are extracted, the system will display the
following menu:
1. Execute a shell on ramdisk filesystem
2. Shut down the system
3. Run IQM to Start Initial System Load
Choose item `1'. An installation prompt will be displayed.
11.Clean and mount the hard drive root filesystem.
Note that the command you use is different for fresh and upgrade
installs.
Fresh (original install was OpenServer 5.0.x):
=====
fsck /dev/hd0root
mount /dev/hd0root /mnt
Upgrade (original install was SCO UNIX Version 4.2):
=======
fsck /dev/boot
mount /dev/boot /mnt
12.Reset the root password with the following command:
/etc/chroot /mnt /bin/su root -c passwd
13. After resetting the password, type "exit" to exit the
installation shell. The menu from step 11 will be redisplayed.
Choose item `2' to shut down. At the 'Safe to Power Off.'
message, remove the N0 floppy, and press any key to reboot off
the hard drive. Root will now be able to log in.
