TS Plus Remote Access to Profits Plus on Windows

updated 7/10/2014

This is a much cheaper alternative to Microsoft's Remote Desktop.  This is their web site: http://www.tsplus.net/

They offer a 15 free trial for 5 users.  The trial software is fully functional.  At the end of the trial period you have to buy and download a license file to keep using the same software.   You get 2 applications.  (1) The TS Plus admin app which lets you build a database of published applications and which users or groups can use those applications.  The TS Plus task bar is considered a published application. (2) A TS Plus login generator that will let you enter a IP address, username, password, domain name. You can select screen resolution and device sharing options.  This creates a .exe file that you need to install on the user's PC desktop which essentially serves as the Profits Plus icon for their PC.

Beware of the list of features offered.  The fine print will reveal that most features are not available unless you have installed extra Windows packages to support those features. It looks like TS Plus has just written a wrapper for the existing Windows software.  My impression of the software is that it is "flakey" and doesn't always behave like the limited documentation suggests.

The latest version 7 seems to be a stripped down version from their previous version 6.  At least the documentation is greatly reduced.

On Dynamic's SBS2011 standard with no Windows add-ons the only possible setup is the TS Plus task bar.  The logoff option works. Each user is individually assigned published applications.  We could not get their Internet Explorer to work with the TSPLUS website for buying the licenses.  We had to install Mozilla Firefox just to get the TS Plus licenses.

On H.L. Claeys 2003 server the TS Plus task bar logoff option didn't work.  I had to make the logoff app a published app and then assign it to the group.   They use the method of assigning published applications to a group and then add users to that group.  I have experienced the problem of once a user has been added to a group, removing it from that group does not let you get the standard desktop back for that user so you can't set a JOBNUMBER.  It looks like once in TS Plus task bar, always in TS Plus task bar.  It might be possible to get the standard Remote Desktop if after taking the user out of the group, you manually assign Remote Desktop to the user in question. (I didn't try this).

Requirements for certain features:

Our most desired method of running Profits Plus in a seamless standalone window (no desktop) is only possible when the host server has software for MS RemoteApp (W7 Enterprise/Ultimate, W8 Enterprise, W2008 or W2012).

All users PC's must have at least a RDP6 client.

Terminal Service Plus Seamless delivers a similar user experience and is available on any Windows host system.

Based on one transparency color selected by the Administrator, the Microsoft Remote Desktop is not displayed anymore and the user will just see his published applications.

The "Seamless Color" can be modified and must be the same when using the AdminTool and the Portable Client Generator.

At Dynamic (SBS2011) the only way to get ability to minimize the TSPLUS task bar window is to generate the client with "classical" Remote desktop selected but assign the user the TSPLUS task bar in the AdminTool published assignments.   The "seamless" client is impractical and misleading at Dynamic because when the server and client are set to the same color background it just uses a picture of the PC desktop for the background but it isn't usable; you can't click on the icons in the picture but it looks like you should be able to.  Cheap trick. Don't bother with it.  If you generate the client with "seamless client" chosen, then there will be no way to minimize the window and they'll have to logoff in order to use their PC for anything.  Bad idea.
