VSI-FAX for Windows installation

As of 2/01/2015 we will no longer install VSI-FAX on any servers.  It is a big pain. We recommend the customer get a MyFax account so we can use email to send faxes.

But just for the sake of legacy documentation here are the VSI-FAX  Installation instructions for Windows.

Add a user to the Windows server named vsifax that belongs to the same groups as other Profits Plus users.

As of 9/1/2010 the version of vsi-fax is 6.1

You can download a 30 day evaluation installation from the following web page:

http://www.esker.com/fm/others/EVAL-VSI_FAX/files.asp

Download the setup.exe file to the %MVS_ROOT%\au\download folder.  Files size is 30MB.

Download the documentation for Windows from the same web page.  Put it in the download folder too.

The last page of the installation instructions in vsifax_instadm.pdf is the Fax Server Information Form.  Print out just that page (237) so you can write down the information that will be asked for during the installation.

Double click on the setup.exe file.

- Agree to the license agreement.

- Let it install in the default folder "C:\Program Files\VSI-FAX"

- At the Software License screen.  Leave the serial Number and Activation Key fields blank and press NEXT for the 30 trial period.  You can enter the Activation key later.

- At the "Specify Cover Page Information" screen enter the information from the Fax Server Information Form.

- At the "Specify Telephony Information" it should already default to the correct values, but change them if necessary.  The CSI and TSI strings should be the fax phone #.

- At the "specify SMTP/POP3 Information" screen, enter the information from the Fax Server Information Form.

- At the "Add fax modem devices to server" enter:

Queue name: Fax1
Description: Company name (HL Claeys)
COM Port: COM? will be COM1, COM2, or COM3

and click the "Add Device" button.

- Click "Next".  It will ask "Do you want to start the VSI-FAX server now?"  Say yes.

- Click Finish.

There is no need to reboot.

Multi-tech modems require you to set the hardware flow control from within vsifax so enter this command at the dos prompt:
    vfxadmin device -u -Q fax1
the word "device" is a literal, fax1 is the device name that vsifax calls your fax queue.  You only have to do this once.

Test it by send yourself a fax.

To tell vsifax how to interpret DOS batch files, add this line to c:\Program Files\VSI-FAX\FaxServer\lib\notify.lst and lib\cfg-new\notify.lst  and lib\cfg-old\notify.lst
    bat;cmd.exe

We have our own custom coverpage so add these two lines to the end of  C:\Program Files\VSI-FAX\FaxServer\lib\vsifax.ini to turn off the default cover page.

Install Server Administration snap in.

Download the VSIFAX Server administration snap-in to the ...mvs\au\download directory  and install it.

Launch the Server administration program with START-->Programs --> VSI-FAX --> VSI-FAX Server Administration.

click on the main server node in the left panel to display the categories on that server (Classes, Devices, Directories, Queues, Resources, Profiles, Users, Event Logs, Inbound Log, Outbound Log).

Add a user Right click the Users category then -->New --> User.
Enter the users login name in the "User ID:" field.  The User name: and Password: fields are optional.  Choose "no" for "Is this user an administrator?"  Click Finish.
Vsifax automatically sets new users to "Licensed" but we don't want that because it limits how many users you can add.  You have to unset the "Licensed" property.  Right click on the user ID you just added in the right panel and choose "Properties".  Uncheck the "Licensed:" option.  Click OK.
set email addr click the Profiles category in the left panel to display all profiles in the right panel.
right click on the user id in the right panel and choose "properties".
  click the "send Options" tab.
in the "Notification" area set the "email when" option to "Failure" and enter the email address below it.

Server Maintenance schedule

In the "Server Maintenance" snap-in, click on the server name in the left panel (above all the categories) and then click "Action" from the top menu and select properties then click the "Maintenance" tab.

Select the "Purge fax logs" task and click the Edit button.  Set it to retain 7 days of logs.  And run the purge once a week (on Saturday if possible) a short time before Profits Plus night processing.
