Message - Another Terminal  Is Using....

When a File lock is left on, it causes the "Another terminal is using….." message to appear on the screen.

Also, while trying to post, expand a file, sort a file, or any other operation that requires exclusive use of files, the message "Another terminal is using file" appears if:

1.      Someone else is using one of the files or

2.      Someone abnormally exited and did not go back into the Profits Plus menu system.

There are a couple of options which can be done to remedy the situation:

OPTION 1:

Go into the Software Maintenance module, Program Stack Inquiry (Task 29).  This shows the users/terminals and the current programs they are in.  By looking at the current programs, you can then call the person in the program locking you out of your function and ask them to back out of what they are doing for a few minutes.   Keep in mind that many files are also shared by other applications.  For example, if you are trying to sort or expand an Inventory module master file, the users must also back out of Order Processing and Purchase Order modules since they also use the Inventory Control master files.  A user at the main menu will show under CURRENT PROGRAM “SMMENU.RUN”.

OPTION 2:

If Option 1 does not free the file lock, or if you are not sure which applications people need to back out of, then have EVERYONE back out to the Main Module List.  PLUS, ALL users who have access to the system but are not currently connected/logged in should log-on and go to the module list also!!!  Option 1, Program stack inquiry should be checked again.

OPTION 3:

Go into the Software Maintenance module, Clear Orphan File Locks (Task 1). Read the information screen. Press the ENTER key to start process and press the ENER key again when the program is finished to return to the main menu.

OPTION 4:

ALL THE USERS MUST BE COMPLETELY OFF THE SERVER BEFORE PERFORMING THIS OPTION.  IF THIS IS THE FIRST TIME YOU OR SOMEONE ON YOUR STAFF IS PERFORMING THIS OPTION, CONTACT US FOR ASSISTANCE.

The most fail-safe/absolute way to clear ALL file locks is to:

1.      Exit all other users completely off the Profits Plus system (so no one but you is even logged on)

2.      On a Unix server:

a.       log in as "root"

b.      execute the "restart_locks" command at the "$" prompt

c.       It will give on-screen instructions on how to proceed. There are only 2 questions to answer: "C" for clearing both types of locks and “Y" for yes to proceed.

3.      On a Windows server:

a.       Have your IT staff remove all files from the /u/mvs/tmp folder.

Improper shutdown/reboot procedures can destroy data !!!
